Paul Whiteman: Pioneer in American Music, 1890-1930

Product Description Product DescriptionWhen Paul Whiteman, the best-known dance band leader of the flapper age, brought his entourage to town it was a big deal. Mayors met him at the train station and presented him with the key to the city, parades and throngs of cheering crowds escorted him to City Hall, and special luncheons were held in his honor. Eventually dubbed the "King of Jazz," Whiteman grew into one of the biggest promoters of players, singers, and arrangers of all times. Many well-known musicians got their first big boost in his band including Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Bing Crosby, Frank Trumbauer, Bix Beiderbecke, Johnny Mercer, Mildred Bailey, and Ferde Grof?.When it came to jazz, Whiteman was a trailblazer. He invented "symphonic jazz" and gave the first performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, one of the most enduringly popular of all jazz-influenced musical works of the 20th century. He perfected the one-nighter concert tours, traveling across the country by train, from city to city, with his unique brand of music. He was also the first to employ a special arranger to craft tailor-made charts to fit the Whiteman Orchestra's instrumentation and sound. This is the first of a two-volume set that will serve as the definitive work on the life and music of this legendary jazz leader. Covering the early years from 1890 to 1930, the text will entertain and inform the reader about the exciting life of one of the major influencers of jazz music and also provide a nostalgic glimpse of what life was like during the Roaring Twenties. Features:? Day-by-day chronology 1890-1930? Comprehensive discography of recordings 1920-1930? Gallery of Whiteman's band members-alphabetical listing from 1918 to 1930 ? Detailed reference notes with biographical sketches of famous people? Extensive bibliography and index, including index of songs? Nearly 60 rare, black and white photos

Photographing Montana 1894-1928: The Life and Work of Evelyn Cameron

Product Description Product DescriptionDust jacket notes: "Leaving behind her childhood world of the English gentry, Evelyn Cameron began ranching on the harsh and beautiful plains of eastern Montana in 1889 with her husband, Ewen. When their initial venture - raising polo ponies - failed, Evelyn turned to glass-plate photography to help support her family. Nearly 2,000 negatives remained in a friend's basement for 50 years after Evelyn's death until author Donna M. Lucey tracked down the extraordinary collection. Photographing Montana showcases more than 150 photographs of life in Montana from the 1890s through the 1920s. Evelyn Cameron's work portrays vast landscapes, range horses, cattle roundups, wheat harvests, community celebrations, and wildlife of the high plains. Her vivid images convey the lonely strength of sheepherders and homesteaders and track the growth of Terry, a small town on the Yellowstone River. Her family portraits are priceless glimpses into the past, capturing the endurance, pride, and hope of those she photographed. Through excerpts from her diaries and letters, we follow Evelyn's transformation from a daughter of the English upper class to a resourceful ranchwoman relishing the independence and challenges of western life. Photographing Montana is essential reading for students of the American frontier and women's history."

Johannes Brahms: Life and Letters

Product Description Product DescriptionThis book is the first comprehensive collection of the letters of Johannes Brahms ever to appear in English. Over 550 are included, virtually all uncut, and there are over a dozen published here for the first time in any language. Although he corresponded throughout his life with some of the great performers, composers, musicologists, writers, scientists, and artists of the day, and although thousands of his letters have survived, English readers have until now had scant opportunity to meet Brahms in person, through his words, and in his own voice. The letters in this volume range from 1848 to just before his death. They include most of Brahm's letters to Robert Schumann, over a hundred letters to Clara Schumann, and the complete Brahms-Wagner correspondence. They are joined by a running commentary to form an absorbing narrative, documented with scholarly care, provided with comprehensive notes, but written for the general music lover--the result is a lively biography. The work is generously illustrated, and contains several detailed appendices and an index.

Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream

Product Description Product DescriptionJoseph Eichler was a pioneering developer who defied conventional wisdom by hiring progressive architects to design Modernist homes for the growing middle class of the 1950s. He was known for his innovations, including "built-ins" for streamlined kitchen work, for introducing a multipurpose room adjacent to the kitchen, and for the classic atrium that melded the indoors with the outdoors. For nearly twenty years, Eichler Homes built thousands of dwellings in California, acquiring national and international acclaim. Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream examines Eichler's legacy as seen in his original homes and in the revival of the Modernist movement, which continues to grow today. The homes that Eichler built were modern in concept and expression, and yet comfortable for living. Eichler's work left a legacy of design integrity and set standards for housing developers that remain unparalleled in the history of American building. This book captures and illustrates that legacy with impressive detail, engaging history, firsthand recollections about Eichler and his vision, and 250 photographs of Eichler homes in their prime. Paul Adamson, AIA, holds a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University and has practiced in New York and San Francisco. He is currently a designer at the San Francisco firm of Hornberger + Worstell, Inc. He lives in Kensington, California. Marty Arbunich is director-publisher of the Eichler Network, a Bay Area-based company devoted exclusively to supporting and preserving the architecture and lifestyle surrounding California's 11,000 Eichler homes. He lives in San Francisco.
